THE LARGEST IN THE WORLD RETURNED TO BRAZIL

Thousands of people attended until the  airport  International Airport of Viracopos, in Campinas (VCP), interior of São Paulo and also to the International Airport of São Paulo, in Guarulhos (GRU) to see the largest plane in the world and the only operational model in flight conditions.

Aircraft for the transport of special cargo – the Antonov 225 Mriya , registration UR-82060 – performed another logistical service in a flight journey to Chile. A total of seven flights making stopovers to their final destination. The penultimate and last stopover was in Brazil, where the purpose was to transport a 180-tonne transformer produced by Asea Brown Boveri (ABB). It was the second largest cargo in the history of the Antonov 225 and the largest air cargo transported in Brazil by plane.

November 10 - A  aircraft took off from Kiev, Ukraine bound for Leipzig, Germany. after the  landing in Leipzig, the aircraft suffered a problem with engine 2. The problem originated from the failure of a valve (cutoff valve) that led to the occurrence of fire emissions. According to Antonov, the engine was inspected and found to be able to remain in service. This was the first “leg” of the flight to Chile.

November 12th - Held  the second leg which was scheduled to be held on Friday (November 11) from Leipzig to Keflavik, Iceland. After the technical stop  Mriya continued the flight from Keflavik to Goose Bay, Canada, completing the third stage.

November 13 – The fourth leg of the flight has been changed! The Antonov 225 was scheduled to fly from Goose Bay to Washington, USA, then to Miami, USA. From Miami to Paramaribo, Suriname. From Paramaribo to Iquique, Chile. These steps have been cancelled!

With that, the Antonov 225 Mriya changed the route, Houston (USA) was included in the journey    the Mriya took off from Goose Bay, Canada to Houston.

November 14 – Early on Monday, the aircraft took off from Houston on a direct flight to Brazil. Campinas (Viracopos) received the Antonov 225 Mriya. The landing in Campinas took place around 11:02 am Brasília time (13:02 UTC).

For the first time, the largest cargo airport in Brazil received the largest operational aircraft in the world.  At night, Antonov took a short flight to Guarulhos. The aircraft landed in Guarulhos at 11:40 pm Brasília time (1:40 am UTC).

November 15th, Brazilian national holiday –  The Antonov 225 took off from Grarulhos at 10:00 pm Brasília time (02:00 UTC) heading for Santiago, Chile.

The Antonov 225 Mriya in Brazil

The Antonov 225 has already been in Brazil for the first time – on February 14, 2010 – was contracted by Chapman Freeborn Airchartering (British air freight company), in the service of Petrobras, transporting three gigantic valves for the Paulínia REPLAN Refinery.

In that year of 2010 the airport in Guarulhos stopped to see  the landing of the "Heavy" with its six ZMKB Progress D-18 engines and 32 tires.

Before the trip to Brazil, the Antonov 225 transported from Tokyo to Santo Domingo around 110 tons of civil construction equipment and supplies donated by Japan to help rebuild Haiti.

For this year 2016, the An-225 was transporting to Santiago, Chile a 180-tonne transformer produced by ABB Transformadores, considered the second largest cargo carried by Antonov and the largest cargo operation carried in a Cargo plane  in Brazil.

Antonov 225 - Historia
About Antonov 225 Mriya

The Antonov 225 Mriya, or An-225, called by NATO the Cossack, is a strategic freighter transport aircraft, built by Antonov Design Bureau, a Ukrainian company that manufactures aircraft. The An-225 is the largest fixed-wing aircraft in the world. The design, built to transport the Buran spacecraft, was a development to augment the successful An-124 Ruslan. Mriya (Мрiя) means "Dream" (Inspiration) in Ukrainian.

The Antonov An-225 is commercially available for carrying large loads due to the unique size of its cargo compartment. To get an idea of its size, it could easily hold more than fifteen hundred people. In addition, it can, as already mentioned, carry loads on the outside and top of the fuselage. Being used to transport cargo in this way, the carrying capacity drops to just under two hundred tons. However, the load measurements increase. The length, for example, goes from just over forty-four meters to over seventy. It is only necessary that this load has a minimum of aerodynamics. Currently, there is only one aircraft in operation.

the first flight happened  on December 21, 1988. The aircraft was in a static demonstration at the Paris Air Show in 1989 and flew during the days released to the public at the Farnborough Air Show in 1990. Two aircraft were ordered, which are currently operated by Antonov Airlines, registered UR-82060 and UR-82070. These are commercially available for carrying overly heavy and large loads, up to 250,000 kg internally, or 200,000 kg above the fuselage. The cargo in the upper part of the fuselage can be up to 70m long.

The second An-225 was partially built during the late 1980s for use by the Soviet Space Program. The design of the second An-225 included a rear cargo door and a redesigned tail with a single vertical stabilizer, making it more effective for freighter transport. After the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1990 and the cancellation of Buran's Space Program, this An-225 was stored in 1994. The six Ivchenko Progress engines were removed from use on the An-124. The first An-225 was later re-engined and put into service.

records

  • In September 2001, he flew carrying a payload of 253.86 tons at a maximum altitude of two kilometers and an average speed of 763.2 km/h. The distance covered was a thousand kilometers, approximately.

  • It is the largest operating aircraft in the world.

  • The only aircraft to have a larger wing span than the An-225 is the Hughes H-4 Hercules "Spruce Goose". However, the Spruce Goose is shorter, lighter, has never flown above twenty-one meters (70 feet) and has flown only once, whereas the An-225 has performed hundreds of flights.

Curiosities

  • The An-225 uses more than 95,000 liters of fuel to cover a distance of just over 5,000 kilometers while the Boeing 747 uses 65,000 to cover the same distance.

  • The design of the fictional An-500 aircraft, featured in the 2012 film, was based on the An-225.
